Tall Tales/Honesty Cub Scout Pack Meeting

This isn't really an update on our family as much as it is to document what I did for our last pack meeting. I was recently called as the cubmaster and I admit...it's been a huge learning curve for me. I'm wanting to keep a record of what I do so it will be helpful to me in future years if I ever am in this position again. I also want to stick it out in the world wide web for any one else who needs a little guidance.

Here's how the program played out:
Early Bird drawing: Wolves
We held this from quarter to the hour to 5 to the hour - it's for "early birds" not for "on time people ;-)
Flag presentation: Wolves
Song: Bears - “I Believe in Being Honest”
Prayer: Webelos
Theme: Honesty - Cubmaster
I found something on in THE FRIEND magazine that I used to define honesty. You can find it here. I drew each letter on a paper and put their definitions on the back. Then gave randomly selected cub scouts one letter and shuffled them up at the front of the pack. The pack had to put the word in order. Then each cub scout read their definition on the back of their paper.
H is for HONOR YOUR WORD
O is for OBEY THE LAW
N is for NEVER CHEAT
E is for EVERYONE DESERVES RESPECT
S if for STAND FOR THE RIGHT
T is for TELL THE TRUTH
Y is for YOU CAN BE TRUSTED
Introduce New Pack Members: We invited the new members up and gave them a "Welcome Cheer."
Wel - come!
Wel - come!
Welcome to our pack!

Leader Awards: We invited leaders up to receive their awards for being trained/etc.
Thank You Awards: This is where we honored the parent volunteers with a “We Will Thank You” Cheer put to “We Will Rock You” on the sound system as the parents were called up to the front. When they all came up, we stopped the music and shouted:

We will, we will - THANK YOU!!
We will, we will - THANK YOU!!
THANK YOU!!

This was a big hit. I hope to do this every time we have something to thank some one for. We gave the parents individual microwave popcorn packs that said, "Thanks for popping in to help at camp."

Den Meeting Minutes and Awards: This is where we invited the den leaders up to share something to spotlight each member of the den and/or to hand out pins, belt loops, badges, etc.
Wolves Den Leaders
Bears Den Leaders
Webelos Den Leaders

Rank Advancements: Cubmaster I kept this simple by inviting the individual boy up with his parents to congratulate him as well as his den leaders for the boy's accomplishment. I gave the patch to the parent to present to the boy and the pin to the boy to present to the parent.

ACTIVITY - Folklore and Guest Visitors
This is where I had dad's dress up as tall tale characters. I had them tell their stories one right after the other and afterwards we played relay races themed around the characters. Bigfoot didn't read his story...he just ran through the back of the room so we could see he briefly so each of the boys could have a "Sasquatch Sighting." I was worried that younger siblings in the room might be frightened by him so we kept his part brief. Doing this activity also passes off Requirement 4C for any bears that attend.

Introduce Tall Tales
Today we will tell traditional American stories called a “tall tales.” A tall tale is a story about a person who is larger than life. The descriptions in the story are exaggerated – much greater than in real life. This makes the story funny. Long ago, the people who settled in undeveloped areas in America first told tall tales. After a hard day’s work, people gathered to tell each other funny stories. Tonight, we’ll share 3 tall tales. Games and Relay Races

Bigfoot or Sasquatch
Bigfoot is a giant humanlike creature of the Pacific Northwest. Huge footprints and fleeting glimpses are all that anyone has seen of it. I have my own personal experience to share. While attending YWs camp at the end of July, we decided to go snipe hunting with Brother Yorgasen! He brought a special horn that helped to call the snipes out of the wild. While we were hunting for snipes, something unexpected happened….we spotted BIGFOOT! It was dark and I didn’t get a very good look but he was tall, hairy and moved like a human. Later in the evening while visiting the bathroom, he jumped into the bathroom! At first I was a little scared until he asked if I wanted a picture! Of course I said, “YES!” and this is it! Bigfoot couldn’t make it tonight…but keep your eyes open! You might see him one of these days! This is when Bigfoot ran through the back of the room.

Bigfoot “Musical Sighting” Game
  1. Hide Bigfoot silhouette pictures around the room
  2. Play “Thriller” while you let the boys run loose to find as many pictures as they can of bigfoot.
  3. When the music stops, have everyone come back.
  4. Whichever den has the most silhouettes wins!
Zorro
I am Zorro! Zorro is Spanish for “fox.” My real name is Don Diego de la Vega. I am a sword-wielding hero raised from wealth and high society. My manners are impeccable and I believe in the importance of right and wrong, similar to Robin Hood. I lived on my father’s hacienda in southern California when it was a colony of Mexico ruled by a governor who taxed and oppressed the people. I received my education in Madrid and became a fencing champion. Once back in California, I pretended to be a quiet social elite as my alter ego, Zorro, fought the tyrannical rule of a dictator, while riding my horse Tornado and casting my “Z” mark on defeated enemies. (You may want to end with your his heroic pose which consists of rearing on my horse Tornado, sword raised high.)

Zorro relay race
  1. Divide group into 2 teams.
  2. Each team member will take turns doing the following:
*Put on Zorro mask, hat, and ride “Tornado” (stick horse) to designated area prepared chalkboard.
*The team member will then cast their “Z” mark on the chalkboard with chalk and ride back.
*Repeat the above with all team members.
  3. Whichever team has all team members finish first wins!
Paul Bunyan
I’m Paul Bunyan! I was born in the northeastern American state of Maine. My mother and father were shocked when they first saw me. When I was only a few weeks old, I weighed more than 99 pounds! As a child, I was always hungry. My parents needed tens cows to supply milk for my meals. Before long, I ate fifty eggs and ten containers of potatoes every day. I was so large that when I rolled over in my sleep I would cause an earthquake! As a boy, I helped my father cut down trees. I had the strength of many men. While living in Maine, I saw and unusual sight! It was snowing blue! As I went out to investigate, I found an animal stuck in the snow. It was a baby ox. I decided to take it home with me. I put the animal near the fireplace, after the ox got warmer, his hair stayed blue! I decided to keep him and called him Babe. I taught Babe to help with my work. I would trim trees and stack the logs for Babe, who would swoosh them out of the woods in one haul.

Paul Bunyan Relay Race
  1. Divide group into 2 teams.
  2. Each team member will take turns doing the following:
*Run to the designated area where the logs are.
    *Stack the logs
*Run back (adult supervisor will knock down the logs before the next team member approaches)
*Repeat the above with all team members.
  3. Whichever team has all team members finish first wins!
